Taking the time to make a difference

Generation Z (those born since the mid-90s, for the uninitiated) are now entering the workplace in droves, and they have lots to offer. They tend to be flexible in where and when they work, which can suit modern-day employers. They are individual and they are curious, which adds to the knowledge capital of the organisation they work for. They are conscientious and seek meaning in their job – their work needs to make a difference beyond the bottom line. For us this is probably the stand-out feature of this demographic and one we encounter on a daily basis. Some may cynically […]

Are you ready for Generation Z?

Move over Millennials, it’s time for Generation Z …not exactly a comforting thought for many a HR manager, still grappling with how to relate to the demographic cohort that is now on the way out. So who are Gen Z? They were born from the mid-90s to 2010, so no older than 23. They make up 20% of the population in Ireland. And they are just starting to enter the workplace. The Irish Times has summed them up as “conscientious, ambitious, and over-anxious”. What does that mean for the workplace? Firstly, they are individuals. They want to be seen as […]

Counteroffers. They don’t work. Here’s why.

The counteroffer. It’s a term to send a shudder down the spine of anyone working in recruitment at the moment.  We’ve always had it, but in today’s tight talent pool, where retention is king, it has never been more widespread. Not least in my area of financial services and banking. All is going swimmingly. A candidate has been matched with what seems like a perfect client, offering an ideal role. Interviews have been concluded and an offer is on the table.  And then … there’s a pause. The candidate is reflecting. Nothing wrong with that – this is an important […]

Frontline defence

A German banking giant faces a $14billion fine over mis-selling. Soon after a Danish financial institution finds itself in the dock for suspicious payments. The business pages are punctuated with tales of large corporations falling prey to fraud and money laundering. Small wonder that compliance roles are among the most sought after in the marketplace. Especially when increased regulation coincides with an influx of finance multi-nationals to our capital city. And this is not some transient trend. Compliance is here to stay. A career option worth considering, surely? First off, people may be put off by the perception that it’s […]

The over 55s were the most contented demographic surveyed. 65% of public sector workers professed to being happy at work, compared […]

The top five traits of successful people

Peter McGuire of the Irish Times spoke to Ken Lee, Managing Director of Eden Recruitment, on the qualities graduates need to develop in order to be successful in the jobs market: Graduates might be blue in the face from hearing about soft skills.
